Multimedia Review 2: Understanding IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS

Multimedia Resource: Google Cloud – PaaS vs. IaaS vs. SaaS vs. CaaS: How Are They Different?

Introduction

For my second multimedia review, I chose to explore three cloud computing service models: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). After learning about the basic idea of cloud computing in my first review, I wanted to understand how these services are different.

I selected a resource from Google Cloud because it provides written explanations and a comparison diagram. I was interested in whether visual information could help me understand technical terms that were difficult to remember.

Description of the Multimedia Resource

The Google Cloud resource explains the different responsibilities of users and cloud service providers. It describes IaaS as a service that provides computing infrastructure, including storage, networking, and virtual machines. PaaS provides tools and an environment for developing applications, while SaaS offers software that people can access through the Internet (Google Cloud, 2026).

An important part of this resource is the comparison diagram. It shows which parts of the computing system are managed by the provider and which parts remain the user’s responsibility.

The diagram is useful because it presents several service models together instead of explaining them separately.

Mayer’s Multimedia Learning Principles

The first principle I considered is the Multimedia Principle. According to Mayer (2009), people can learn more effectively when words and relevant pictures are presented together rather than words alone.

Google Cloud’s comparison diagram supports this principle by connecting written explanations with a visual representation of cloud services. The diagram helps learners compare the models and identify differences in management responsibilities.

The second principle is the Signaling Principle. Mayer (2009) explains that highlighting the organization of important information can support learning.

The diagram uses separate categories to organize the service models. This makes it easier to compare information without reading every explanation repeatedly.

However, the diagram also contains technical vocabulary. Beginners may need additional examples to understand some of the terms.

My Learning Experience

Before exploring this resource, I found IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS confusing because their names sounded similar. The comparison helped me recognize that their main difference involves how much responsibility users have.

As a university student, SaaS is the easiest model for me to understand because I regularly use applications such as Google Docs and Gmail. I can use these applications without managing the servers or software infrastructure.

IaaS and PaaS are still more difficult for me because I have limited experience with developing applications or managing computing systems.

The visual comparison gave me a clearer starting point for understanding these concepts.

Overall Evaluation

Overall, I think Google Cloud’s resource is useful for students who want to understand cloud computing service models. The combination of written explanations and a comparison diagram makes technical information easier to organize.

Compared with the video in my first review, this resource allows me to study the information at my own pace and return to specific sections.

One limitation is that the resource may be challenging for complete beginners because of its technical language. Adding more examples from everyday student life could make it more accessible.

I would recommend this resource to students who already understand the basic concept of cloud computing and want to learn more about its different services.
