Multimedia Resource: Amazon Web Services (AWS) – Shared Responsibility Model
https://aws.amazon.com/compliance/shared-responsibility-model
Introduction
For my third multimedia review, I decided to explore cloud security and the Shared Responsibility Model. In my previous reviews, I learned about cloud computing and the differences between IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. However, I was still curious about how information is protected when people use cloud services.
I chose the Shared Responsibility Model from Amazon Web Services (AWS) because it explains an important idea about cloud security. Before exploring this resource, I assumed that cloud providers were responsible for almost everything related to security. I wanted to understand whether users also have responsibilities when storing information or using applications in the cloud.
This resource includes written explanations and a diagram, which makes it suitable for analyzing how multimedia can support learning.
Description of the Multimedia Resource
The AWS resource explains that cloud security is a shared responsibility between the service provider and the customer. AWS uses two main terms to describe this relationship: security “of” the cloud and security “in” the cloud (Amazon Web Services, n.d.).
Security “of” the cloud refers to AWS’s responsibility for protecting the infrastructure that supports cloud services. This includes physical data centres, hardware, networking equipment, and other systems used to operate the cloud.
Security “in” the cloud refers to the responsibilities of customers. These responsibilities depend on the AWS services they use. For example, customers using Amazon EC2 must manage operating system updates, application software, and certain firewall settings. Customers using services such as Amazon S3 are responsible for managing their data and setting appropriate access permissions.
The resource includes a diagram that visually separates these responsibilities. The diagram shows customer responsibilities in one section and AWS responsibilities in another, allowing learners to compare them more easily.
An additional AWS video explains how the Shared Responsibility Model helps organizations understand security controls and compliance requirements (Amazon Web Services, 2022).

Mayer’s Multimedia Learning Principles
One principle demonstrated by this resource is the Multimedia Principle. Mayer (2009) suggests that people learn more effectively when relevant words and pictures are presented together instead of words alone.
The AWS diagram supports this principle by showing the relationship between cloud providers and customers. Without the diagram, beginners might need to remember several technical explanations separately. The visual representation helps organize the information into two main categories.
Another relevant principle is the Signaling Principle. This principle suggests that highlighting important information and showing its organization can help learners understand complex topics (Mayer, 2009).
The diagram uses separate sections and labels to distinguish security “of” the cloud from security “in” the cloud. This organization directs attention to the most important difference in the model.
The Segmenting Principle is also relevant when considering how this resource could be improved. Mayer (2009) explains that learners may benefit when complex information is presented in manageable parts. Although the diagram provides a useful overview, beginners might understand it better if each responsibility were introduced separately with a simple example.
My Learning Experience
The most important idea I learned is that cloud security does not depend only on the cloud provider. Customers must also understand their responsibilities.
As a university student, I regularly use online applications to complete assignments, communicate with classmates, and store documents. Although these applications are not the same as managing an AWS account, the resource made me think more carefully about my own online habits.
For example, I should use strong passwords, protect my accounts, and check sharing permissions before sending documents to other people.
The diagram helped me understand the basic division of responsibilities because I could compare both sides visually. However, I still found technical terms such as firewall configuration, encryption, and operating systems difficult to understand.
I think including more examples related to students or everyday internet users would make the resource easier to follow.
Overall Evaluation
Overall, I think the AWS Shared Responsibility Model is a useful educational resource because it combines detailed written explanations with a clear visual diagram.
One strength is that the diagram organizes technical information into understandable categories. The video also provides an additional explanation for learners who prefer listening rather than reading.
However, the resource seems more suitable for people who already have some knowledge of cloud computing. Beginners may struggle with technical vocabulary and the number of responsibilities presented at once.
I would recommend adding a simple scenario, such as a student sharing files online or a small business using cloud storage, to demonstrate how security responsibilities work in practice.
This resource helped me understand that cloud computing is not only about convenience and accessibility. It also requires users and organizations to make careful decisions about protecting information.
